BOYD, MALCOLM (1923-), U.S. Episcopal Priest and Gay Activist Boyd gave up a prominent career as a radio-television producer in 1951 to enter seminary and seek ordination as an Episcopal priest. He was ordained in 1955 and became nationally renowned in 1960s for his bestselling book, Are You Running With Me, Jesus?, a collection of deeply personal prayers written in a modern idiom. He was also well known for his civil rights and anti-Vietnam War activism. In 1976, he publicly acknowledged that he was homosexual. He has since become outspoken as an advocate of gay rights, especially within the context of organized religion. |
